A Strange Thing Happened

A strange thing happened in the car park,

On this normal, grey afternoon,

Cloudy and neither warm nor cold.

Tuesday, of all the days in the week,

The most unlikely

For anything memorable.

I saw her first at about ten paces,

Not striking or impressive,

But just right somehow.

All was right.

As we approached,

I moved a little to one side

To let her pass.

And she smiled,

And I smiled.

All so right and natural.

And then we each passed on

Into the rest of our lives.
