We judge with no pity,
Not a shred of mercy,
What we watch avidly
On the news.
With relief
That we have done nothing wrong.
We have no responsibility,
No responsibility for the crime
That we condemn
Wholeheartedly.
We revel in a murder or two
With Poirot or Maigret
And admire how the guilt of others is exposed.
For we are in the clear
And spotless.
Nothing to do with us.
We say how terrible the news is,
How horrible,
After we have enjoyed watching it
For half an hour or so.
We take no responsibility
For the outcomes.
None at all,
As we go to put on the kettle
For another cup of tea.
